USF Pre-Med Workshop

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Well went to the Pre-Med workshop at USF today with my 2 sons. What a nice school, what a nice, helpful workshop they put together for us, they’re offering another one in February we’re going to attend as well. Probably one of the best parts was being able to question the small panel of medical students they made available for us. It’s not often you actually get to ask those ahead of you advice, it certainly was a nice feature. What I find attractive about this college of medicine, and certainly the aura of the university as a whole, is the pleasant attitude and welcoming atmosphere that certainly seems extremely conducive for learning, in short it’s definitely the place for me - I feel I have found my match. My sons echo these statements as well - now our goal is in place - we know where we want to go - USF, go Bulls!

Yesterday I got the final approval for my SPC2600 Oral Communications course. This is very exciting indeed. The professor, as all of the professors I have had thus far, is a doll! This course looks very intriguing and I’m looking forward to it very much. I’m moving foward at the speed of light - well almost - I have 16 credits now this semester - next semester will be brutal at 21 credits - yikes!

Oral Communications

I found the most awesome course to help me fulfill my requirements for my AA degree. I found Oral Communications online over the next 8 weeks. I’ve gotten into the course and paid for it, my textbook is on its way… now I am just waiting for my school to accept it back as transient so that I can get the credit I need for my AA degree. Since they denied the previous request and haven’t responded to the form yet, I’m wondering if they will approve it or not. Makes me a tad nervous guessing to see if they will approve me or not. If they don’t it certainly makes it more difficult to complete on time and move on to USF. Oh well - positive thoughts - there is no reason for denying this course - so here’s hoping it goes through. Biting my fingernails while I wait though.

Update…

Went to the Deaf Convention yesterday in Kissimmee, FL and it was awesome. One of the coolest things I was able to do was order a custom made t-shirt for my grandson Draven from a Deaf person. I was able to relay to him the size, color and name I wanted heat transferred on to the shirt. It is an adorable shirt that has his name written in sign language on the front and the alphabet on the back.Another cool thing I was able to do recently was get a small 12 gallon salt water AquaPod tank up and running. Not much in it yet, but do have a very happy percula clownfish and some inverts (shrimp, snails & crabs) as well as some corals and a sponge. Will be adding more over the next little bit, glad it’s tiny - will keep me from going broke supporting this new habit ;-)School is going great, I’ve done remarkably well in both chemistry classes in spite of the flu bug I have had the last few weeks. It was definitely tough to concentrate and learn, but thankfully I got through it and hopefully it will stay away with no unwanted relapses. Learning is so much fun it’s addictive!Okay now back to my daily grind.

ASL

Stands for American Sign Language. I’ve gotten 100’s on my class tests and next week is the midterm. I feel very good about it and I am also working on my class project. We have to pick a song and learn to sign it and perform it for the class. I’ve chosen “In The Ghetto” by Elvis Presley and have been working on translating it into ASL and learning the signs. Once I learn the signs I then have to practice doing them where it flows nicely and looks like art. When you see songs performed in ASL it’s like art in motion it’s just beautiful to the eyes to see. I want to be able to give a stellar performance and I plan to practice to do just that. We’ve (the kids and I) decided to sign more to each other in the house. It’s quite fun actually, once we get better at it it will be even more fun, because right now we’re more at the level of still having to finger spell many words. We found the closest Deaf Church and plan to attend Sunday. There’s also a Deaf conference we’re going to attend next Saturday. The Deaf community overall have been very kind to us, we find the people very eager to help us learn our signs better and a joy to chat with. Most people probably don’t think of Deaf people and chatting in the same thought - but I am here to tell you they do just that and they do so with more enthusiasm than us hearing people do too. I’m very happy with my choice to learn sign language and I am very grateful our college has offered it for us!
