HOW DID WE GET HERE by Robin Taylor-Corbridge © 2007
What a crazy world we do live in.
There’s so much to say where to begin?
When you think you are safe in your life
You can suddenly fall upon turmoil and strife.
People are trying to better themselves,
So they can do more than stock shelves.
They go to school to gain an education
Or perhaps they are there to learn a vocation.
They most likely feel safe to go to school
For some people life on campus is even cool.
Then all of a sudden our foundation is rocked
By some lunatic who’s wielding a gun that’s cocked.
He unloads rounds of ammunition all over the place
Hitting people in their legs, stomachs and face.
Many people senselessly die
As the entire campus goes awry.
We see traces of columbine tragedy here
Who would’ve expected this to rear.
So many lives have been shattered.
So many people have now been battered.
How will we as a society pick up and move on?
It will take all the newfound fears to be gone.
Somehow we have to heal and go on our path
This is tough to do in any aftermath.
The families and friends these victims left
Are without a doubt now bereft.
Can’t imagine what it’s like to be in their shoes
Hearing such unspeakable horrific news.
In the end all we can do is pray
Hoping that helps them get through their day.
Thoughts and prayers are sprinkled around
They bring with them a peaceful sound.
We pray for the day when calm does exist.
When stability and peace does subsist.
When we can get on with our lives not just in a normal fashion
But when we can go on forward with a lot of passion.
What will it take for this balance to restore?
To get life back to what it was once before.
We must rid the violence that has become the norm
And make peace and compassion take on new form.
